Pull ups are a great upper body exercise and probably the best PULL exercise that there is. However, lots of people do a pull up incorrectly and many don't even attempt to do on account that it is too hard to do. Here is a quick tutorial about doing a pull-up properly and also a beginner's version.
Get hold of a steady bar and let yourself hang from it. Make sure you feel a stretch in your lats and your biceps. Now slowly pull yourself up using your back and your arms.
You often see legs cross and behind the body. That is another method, not the best one, but acceptable. Work towards getting a form as indicated above.
If you are a beginner, then you can use a chair to support yourself. Once you can do 15 pull ups without the chair, try 5 without the chair and the remaining with the chair
If you cannot go all the way up, you can stop in the middle as shown and work your way day by day.
